The return of our original Porter, just in time for the autumn season! This style has a long rich history in both English and American brewing. In London, porters were often aged in massive holding tanks for months. The Meux Brewery held the world record at the time for the largest wooden fermenter which held approximately 27,750 bbl. One fateful day in October of 1814 one of Meux’s giant vats burst, toppling houses and flooding the surrounding city streets with rivers of porter. Eight people ended up succumbing to injuries, drowning, or alcohol poisoning from drinking more of their fill from the free beer pooling in the London gutters.
It brings to mind our favorite beer joke: My grandfather drowned in a vat of beer…but he got out 3 times to use the toilet
